Lawyers say enough is enough on US sanctions

The economic sanctions imposed by the United States have sparked a revolt in some countries. Hundreds of lawyers from around the world have written a letter to US President Joe Biden calling for an end to such sanctions.

The letter argued that the US-led sanctions serve the political purpose of pressurising rival countries rather than promoting their alleged humanitarian value.

As an example, the letter cited the US imposition of sanctions on the PA in January 2006, after Hamas won the legislative elections, on the grounds that Hamas had a vested interest in the PA’s affairs. The letter noted that the US has not imposed any sanctions against Israel, despite the fact that Israel bombed and killed more than 30,000 civilians in the recent conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The letter also argues that the US uses its dollar hegemony and its dominance in the Western world to impose sanctions against countries it does not like at will.
