UK imposes new sanctions on Belarus on election anniversary

The United Kingdom, acting in coordination with its international partners, has announced sanctions against 4 individuals and 3 organisations in Belarus.

The sanctions are in response to Belarus’s human rights abuses and continued facilitation of Russia’s occupation of Ukraine.

A planned fund of £2.5 million has also been announced to support the survival of Belarusian human rights and civil society causes in the face of political repression.

The latest sanctions bring the total number of sanctions against Belarus to over 200. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: “Four years on from the brutal scenes we witnessed in Belarus, Lukashenko’s relentless crackdown on civil society shows no sign of abating: More than 40,000 citizens have been arrested on trumped-up political charges, civil society and independent media are being trampled on, and there is a regime that does not respect democracy or human rights. We stand with the Belarusian people in their quest for freedom and democracy and call on the regime to immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners.”

The individuals and organisations targeted in the latest sanctions decision in Belarus are as follows:

Denis Anatolievich Tolstenkov: Commander of penal colony No. 4

Andrei Sergeevich Palchyk: Former commander of penal colony 1

Filip Vladimirovich Sturchanka: Commander of penal colony number 3

Aleksey Valerievich Lazarenko: commander of penal colony number 15

OJSC StankoGomel: A Belarusian machine tool manufacturer exporting goods to Russia for use in the Russian military industrial sector.

JSC NIIEVM: A Belarusian Government-owned enterprise operating in the Belarusian defence sector.

Ruchservomotor LLC: a Belarusian machine tool manufacturer exporting goods to Russia for use in the Russian military industry.
