European Union decided to ease some economic sanctions imposed on Syria. In this context, Syria’s national airline Syrian Arab Airlines (Syrianair) was removed from the EU’s sanctions list.
In the statement made by the EU Council, it was stated that restrictive measures in sectors such as energy, transport, finance and banking were suspended. In particular, sanctions in the energy sector, including oil, gas and electricity, were temporarily lifted.
In addition, financial institutions in Syria, such as the Industrial Bank, Popular Credit Bank, Savings Bank and Agricultural Cooperative Bank, were also removed from the sanctions list. The provision of funds and economic resources to the Central Bank of Syria was allowed, while certain exemptions were made to the prohibitions on the establishment of banking relations between EU banks and Syrian banks. It was emphasised that these steps were taken in order to support an inclusive political transition in Syria, promote economic recovery and ensure stability.
On the other hand, it was reported that Cham Wings Airlines, Syria’s largest private airline, remained on the EU sanctions list.
