The U.S. President today has signed an executive order that terminated the Burundi Sanctions program in effect since 2015. The order has put an end to the economic sanctions implemented by the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), in view of the “positive political developments” in the country, and the reforms rolled out by President Ndayishimiye.
Economic sanctions implemented by the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) against Burundi are no longer in effect and blocked persons pursuant to the Regulations have been removed from the Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons list. Properties and interests in property are released.
The E.U. had already lifted the sanctions on Burundi in June 2021 which were implemented in 2016, in the wake of the political protests against former Burundian president Nkurunziza.
The lifted U.S. sanctions were put in effect in 2015, by Barack Obama, to deal with the political repression and crisis in Burundi within the framework of a national emergency.
