Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party of trying to make the country dependent on Russia and announced that he was working with European and other partners to prepare sanctions against the Georgian government.
“The situation in Georgia is, of course, not just a problem of one nation, not just a problem of our region. [“The problem is how the current government in Georgia is pushing the country into an open dependence on Russia. Their actions against their own people are really shameful,” he said.
The opposition Coalition for Change party said police raided its offices and detained its leader, Nika Gvaramia.
The party shared a video in which several police officers are seen dragging Gvaramia into a car, with a person in the background saying, “How are you dragging him? What are you doing, what are you doing? He feels bad. Call an ambulance. She is unconscious,” he is heard saying.
Local media reported that police also raided the offices of several other opposition groups and civil society organizations.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of the Georgian Dream party had earlier accused the opposition of attempting a coup and said the police raids were targeting those who had incited violence during protests to topple his government.
