EU Proposes Sanctions Against Chinese Firms Helping Russia’s War Efforts

The European Union is proposing to impose sanctions on a number of Chinese companies that it alleges helped Russian companies develop drones used against Ukraine. This would require the support of 27 member states.

According to documents seen by Bloomberg, the European Commission is also considering restrictions on additional Russian oil tankers to hamper Moscow’s ability to circumvent existing restrictive measures.

Some of these firms are already sanctioned by the US and the UK.

The EU has also proposed adding to its sanctions programme a Chinese national who controls a company that violates EU trade restrictions; a Hong Kong-based firm that supplies banned microelectronic components to Russian military firms; and North Korean defence officials involved in the country’s decision to deploy troops to help Russia.

According to the documents, as part of the bloc’s 15th sanctions package since Moscow’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the commission proposes to list more than 50 individuals and about 30 organisations, freeze their assets and impose travel bans.
