The United States (U.S.) has sanctioned Brazilian Judge Moraes, who is leading the investigation into former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
The U.S. has triggered a new diplomatic crisis with Brazil by sanctioning Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is presiding over the case of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
The Bolsonaro investigation was cited as the reason for the sanctions.
Judge Moraes is the lead investigator in allegations that former president Jair Bolsonaro and his allies planned a coup attempt after the 2022 elections. Bolsonaro has denied the accusations and called Moraes a “dictator.”
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused Moraes of conducting “an unlawful witch hunt against both U.S. and Brazilian individuals and companies.” The statement emphasized “arbitrary arrests and censorship that constitute human rights violations.”
