The UK, in coordination with allies in the United States and Australia, has announced new sanctions targeting Russian “bulletproof” hosting services that facilitate global cybercrime.
The sanctions focus on Media Land, a major provider of online infrastructure used for ransomware and phishing, and its ringleader, Alexander Volosovik (aka Yalishanda). Volosovik has links to notorious cyber gangs such as Evil Corp and LockBit.
Aeza Group LLC was also sanctioned for providing services to the Social Design Agency, a Russian organization previously sanctioned for spreading disinformation and attempting to destabilize democracies.
The UK government estimates that cyber-attacks cost British businesses £14.7bn in 2024 alone.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that because the Kremlin has turned Russia into a “safe haven” for these criminals, the UK and its partners are taking direct action to disrupt these networks and protect national security.
