US Intensifies Pressure on Iranian Oil Trade with New Sanctions

The United States government announced significant new sanctions on Thursday aimed at curbing Iran’s illicit petroleum trade. In a coordinated action, the Department of State and the Department of the Treasury targeted shipping and aviation networks accused of facilitating these sales.

According to officials, the primary objective is to sever the financial lifelines that allow the Iranian government to fund “malign activities,” including the support of regional proxy groups and the development of weapons systems that threaten US allies. The State Department specifically designated 17 entities and vessels operating in jurisdictions including India, Panama, and the Seychelles. Concurrently, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 41 additional targets—comprising individuals, companies, and aircraft—to further disrupt the financial infrastructure sustaining Iran’s petrochemical exports.
