Major Dutch shipyard suspected of breaching Russian sanctions

Dutch authorities have initiated criminal proceedings against the nation’s largest shipbuilder, Damen Shipyards, for allegedly violating Russian sanctions established after the invasion of Ukraine.

According to The Brussels Times, located in Gorinchem near the Port of Rotterdam, Damen Shipyards is under investigation for corruption, forgery, and money laundering, as well as for breaking sanctions tied to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to a public prosecutor’s statement.

Prosecutors have launched two separate cases against the company. The first case involves alleged corruption in ship sales between 2006 and 2017, focusing on numerous falsified documents reportedly used to conceal large commissions paid to agents, including in export credit insurance applications.

The second case concerns the sale of goods and technology potentially enhancing Russia’s military and technological capabilities after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Damen is suspected of continuing to supply Russia with goods and technology despite EU sanctions against Moscow.

Damen has denied all accusations of corruption and sanction violations.

As the primary shipbuilder for the Dutch navy, Damen employs around 12,000 individuals, operates in 120 countries, and constructs frigates, combat support ships, and sea patrol vessels.
