UK imposes sanctions on Russian oil and LNG vessels

The UK announced the imposition of sanctions on 18 more Russian oil tankers and four liquefied natural gas vessels, the largest group of sanctions to date against Russia’s so-called ‘shadow fleet’.

The announcement came after the US and Canada agreed to join a ‘call to action’ to combat it, which was backed by 44 European countries after being announced by the UK in July.

‘Any actor facilitating and supporting Russia’s malign activities could be subject to sanctions,’ the government said.

Russia rejects Western pressure to limit its oil exports, and in the past year there has been an increase in the number of tankers carrying cargoes that are not regulated or insured by traditional Western suppliers.

18 oil tankers will be banned from UK ports and denied access to British maritime services, bringing the total number of sanctioned Russian oil tankers to 43. These vessels include NS Bora, Atlas and Moskovsky Prospect.

The targeted oil tankers were said to have carried an estimated 4.9 billion pounds ($6.37 billion) worth of oil last year.
As part of Thursday’s action, Britain also imposed sanctions on Russian gas company Rusgazdobycha JSC.
