China sanctions 12 defence-related US companies and 10 executives over arms sales to Taiwan and in retaliation for previous US sanctions against Chinese companies linked to Russia
China announced sanctions against 12 US defence companies and 10 executives for arms sales to Taiwan in retaliation for US sanctions.
The organisations in question include units of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, General Dynamics and other companies. Senior executives at Northrop Grumman Corporation and General Dynamics were also targeted. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the measures came after the US “indiscriminately imposed illegal unilateral sanctions on a number of Chinese organisations, citing alleged Russia-related factors” and after the US “continued to sell arms to China’s Taiwan region”.
China does not recognise Taiwan as a self-governing island and says it can annex the island, which it considers its territory, by force if necessary.
Following the inauguration of Taiwan’s new President Lai Ching-te on Monday last week, China announced that it would impose sanctions on Boeing Defence, Space and Security and two other US defence companies for arms sales to Taiwan, as well as former Republican Wisconsin Representative Mike Gallagher, who supports the island.
Accordingly, it will freeze all assets of businesses in China and deny visas for individuals and immediate family members to enter the country, including Hong Kong and Macau. Businesses and individuals will also be banned from doing any business with Chinese companies.
