US, UK and Australia impose sanctions on Russia-based cybercrime group Evil Corp

The US Treasury Department, in coordination with the UK and Australia, has announced a series of political sanctions against members of the Russia-based Evil Corp cybercrime group and its associated companies.

Officials say Evil Corp is a cybercriminal organisation responsible for the development and distribution of the Dridex malware.

The US Department of Justice also announced an indictment charging an Evil Corp loyalist member in connection with his alleged use of the BitPaymer ransomware targeting victims in the US.

The five suspects allegedly linked to the Russian cybercrime group Evil Corp are Eduard Benderskiy; Viktor Grigoryevich Yakubets; Aleksandr Viktorovich Ryzhenkov; Sergey Viktorovich Ryzhenkov; Aleksey Yevgenevich Shchetinin; Beyat Enverovich Ramazanov and Vadim Gennadievich Pogodin.

US officials say the Evil Corp sanctions also named Vympel-Assistance LLC and Solar-Invest LLC, two Russia-based business and management consulting companies 100% owned by Benderskiy.

Along with Tuesday’s US sanctions orders, the Justice Department’s unsealed indictment charged Ryzhenkov for allegedly using the BitPaymer ransomware tool to ‘target large numbers of victims across the United States’.

In 2019, the US sanctioned 17 individuals and seven businesses linked to Evil Corp after its leaders were linked to Dridex’s $100 million malware scheme.
